Curtain tracks for heavy curtains

For heavy loads, it may be wise to choose a curtain track for heavy curtains. Most of HASTA's curtain tracks also work for heavier curtains, but you may need to add more brackets to ensure stable hanging.

Even if the track can handle the weight, curtains can sometimes start to slide stiffly. In such cases, roller glides can be a good solution to ensure the curtains run smoothly when opening and closing. As a practical guideline, we have grouped HASTA's curtain tracks by load for light, medium, and heavy curtains. In the guide, we also review which tracks and accessories are best suited when the load is high.

The most important thing, however, is that you mount the track with the correct bracket and appropriate screws and fittings based on the surface where the track is to be installed!

Which curtain tracks are suitable for heavy curtains?

When choosing curtain tracks for heavy curtains, it is important to consider both stability and function. Heavy curtains, such as blackout curtains, extra wide drapes, or curtains made of thick materials, place a higher load on the track and can make the curtain glide less smoothly if the track is not adapted for the weight. For extra heavy curtain installations, for example in public environments, we always recommend choosing one of the models below.

For wall mounting of really heavy installations, you can also supplement with heavy-duty brackets, an extra stable wall bracket that fits selected tracks and provides a more secure mounting under high load.

Below you will find our recommended curtain tracks for heavy curtains, where each model has its own characteristics to suit different needs. Further down in the guide there is also a table that provides a quick overview of which tracks are best suited for high loads.

How do I know if my curtains are considered heavy?
Generally, heavy curtains are often considered to be curtains made from thicker materials – for example, blackout curtains with extra lining or velvet curtains. Sheer and thin fabrics, on the other hand, weigh less and put less strain on the track.

Also, keep in mind that it's not just the material that determines if your curtains are considered heavy. The width and length of the curtain also play a big role: the more fabric, the more weight. Extra wide and long curtains therefore often become heavier, even if the fabric itself isn't heavy-duty.

In a home environment, a track for medium-weight curtains usually works well, but a common sign of high load is that the curtain starts to slide sluggishly when you pull it back and forth – especially if you have thick fabric, a lot of width, and length. You may also notice that the track feels unstable or starts to sag, that the brackets need to be closer together to support the weight, or that it becomes extra difficult at joints.

If you want a solution that can handle really heavy curtains that also glide easily, it's a good idea to choose a track and gliders that are designed for this. Further down in the guide, you'll find our recommended options.

Cabin rail

The Cabin rail is a strong and stable aluminum curtain rail that is especially suitable for heavy curtains and curtain arrangements with high loads, particularly in public environments where the rail is used frequently. For smoother operation, you can add roller glides, so that even tall and heavy curtains glide easily when opening and closing.

Corduroy track

With a corded track, you move the curtain with a cord and don't need to pull the curtain itself. It's a smart solution especially for tall curtains, when it's difficult to move the curtain by pulling the fabric itself. This type of track can handle heavy curtain arrangements and is also available in an extra heavy-duty model for truly heavy curtain arrangements.

Motorized tracks

Open the curtain with a simple push of a button on the remote control – or schedule opening and closing in an app for an extra touch of everyday luxury. With a motorized curtain track, you can control the curtains completely without manual handling, which is especially convenient for heavy curtains and large installations. Our motorized curtain tracks can handle high loads and are suitable for both public environments and smart homes.
