Sun protection for balcony doors

Open up for spring! Finally, it's time to enjoy the sun and warmth again after a long winter. But spring is still at its best outdoors, and with a stronger sun, the need for stylish and functional products for sun shading in your home also increases.

With us, you'll find a large selection of quality sun protection products that suit all homes and needs, but some windows may feel more obvious than others to update with good sun protection. Common sun protections such as roller blinds or free-hanging pleated blinds are often installed in a way that suits traditional windows that open outwards, which is often not the case with, for example, balcony doors.

A balcony or patio door is found in most homes today, and when spring arrives, the use of these often increases significantly. However, the need for sun shading remains here too and can be extra important on hot days when the sun's rays are beating down and increasing the heat in the room. Here are our best tips for sun protection products specifically for balcony and patio doors – regardless of design.

Sun protection for inward-opening doors

Many balcony doors open inwards, which can be a challenge when it comes to sun shading products – especially during the warmer months when the door is used frequently. Our clever solution is called Multifix and is suitable for inward-opening windows and doors where sun protection products mounted on the wall or in the recess can be in the way when the door needs to be opened. Multifix is clamped onto the window frame, which means the sun protection moves with the door when it opens without being in the way. The product is available with several different fabrics depending on the desired level of sun shading, and also as a pleated blind – the trendy sun protection with a pleated fabric that looks really good in the window.

Extra height for glass doors

Perhaps your balcony or patio door opens outwards but is entirely made of glass, which means an extra area to cover. In that case, you can order an extra tall roller blind where the fabric can be pulled down further than on regular roller blinds. These roller blinds are available in heights up to 280 cm depending on the model and in a variety of fabrics from transparent to blackout. Keep in mind that the maximum height indicated is the functional height of the roller blind – meaning the maximum height you can pull down the roller blind. Never pull the roller blind down further than the recommended functional height, even if there is fabric left on the tube – there is a risk that the fabric will detach from the tube.

Smart solutions for large windows

Is your balcony door part of a larger window section? Then it can be stylish to opt for sun protection that covers the entire section for a more uniform feel. Vertical blinds are both a stylish and smart choice for such window sections. This sun protection product screens off the sun's strong rays without blocking out light and also takes up minimal space when open. Vertical blinds provide flexible sun protection in large window sections where the sun is strong, counteracting an uncomfortable indoor climate caused by heat.

Flexibility with curtain lengths

Another option is to go for custom-made curtains across the entire window section. Wide, floor-to-ceiling curtains are a really stylish part of the decor, and here too you can choose from several different fabrics depending on how opaque you want the curtains to be. Curtains can look just as good when open as when drawn, but if you want to avoid constantly drawing them aside, a tip is to place the seam between two curtain panels right next to the door. When the curtains are hanging, it gives the impression of one continuous "curtain wall" but at the same time, it's easy to slip out in between without drawing the curtains – smart!

Safe sun protection for energetic children

What could be better than when the little ones can finally run in and out through the patio door and enjoy the warm weather? During this time of year, safety also becomes extra important as many sunshades have dangling bead chains that can pose a risk to small children if left hanging freely. All our sunshades with cords or bead chains are therefore delivered with safety devices that keep the cord/bead chain out of reach of children. Make sure to install the safety device at a sufficient height according to the included instructions. When ordering a custom-made sunshade, you also specify the mounting height of the sunshade – we then manufacture the bead chain at a child-safe distance so that it is 150 cm above the floor.
